History
Born on November 14th, 1963, David Jasper Schmidt was the only child of Lionel Schmidt, the current Chief of the Hospital Staff and his wife, Jenny Schmidt, who was the Head Nurse. Because of his parents busy schedules at the hospital he spent most of his time with a nanny. He was named after a great ancestor who had developed a deep friendship with the Wilkinson family, but because Adeline Sutton bought out the hospital from the Wilkinson family and bestowed the Schmidt’s with it, this friendship had all but died out. Growing up, his parents had pushed him from a public school in Stone Creek to a private school in Cuttlebone City where he graduated High School. While he was in High School, David often volunteered at Stone Creek Memorial Hospital to spend time with his parents, by doing so he had bonded with the hospital’s staff members more than with his own parents.
David then made his choice of Harvard University and left Cuttlebone City behind. Although his parents had enough money to send him to college, David had to pay for his own extracurricular activities, he became a waiter at a local diner named Chunky’s. There he met a woman by the named of Monica Biel who soon became more than a stranger as they both helped one another through their college courses.
Being a professors daughter; Monica became a wild child once she was away from her small hometown. Her vast pairing with David led to them conceiving a baby and since she was against abortion, Monica decided to keep the baby. She gave birth to Gail Susan Schmidt, and found themselves a place off campus while David continued his schooling and Monica stood home with their baby. In the Summer of 1985 they committed to each other by getting married in front of all their college friends and once he finished his schooling the traveled back to Stone Creek where they settled down.
In 1988, David began a dangerous affair with the striking and demanding Helen Thurlow.
He took an interning job at Stone Creek Memorial Hospital and Monica worked in a library. But something was wrong, David began to notice breaks in his wife’s personality and it became a hazard to their little family. Monica denied that anything was wrong, she constantly badgered David for not trusting her. It wasn’t until 1992 did tragedy strike, while David was at the hospital, Monica nearly drove her car off a bridge with their daughter in the backseat. She was convinced that someone wanted to harm Gail. Because she was in denial still of her health, David had to commit her to the Wallingford Springs Institute, she was diagnosed with Schizophrenia.
Their daughter was terrified after the ordeal that she refused to visit her mother. David returned to working at the hospital full-time, hoping to prove to his father that he was good enough to one day take over as Chief of Staff. In 1992 Monica’s condition only intensified until she was able to gravely harm herself -- before they could rush her to the hospital she was pronounced dead. David had blamed himself for not being there. He spent the next couple of years pushing himself into work and spending a lot of time with his daughter, Gail.
Gail Schmidt grew up to be a bookworm and introvert, through out High School her main focus was on school and David had insisted she go to medical school afterwards. But her buddying romance with Adrian Stone, a boy from the wrong side of the tracks, bothered David.
When David’s affair finally came to light in 1998 his medical career had dipped so low that his own father turned him down for the Chief of Staff position that was in his legacy. Instead, Lionel retired and offered the position to Dr. Jeremy Joplin who accepted. This angered David who had married Helen in 1999 after her divorce from her husband, James Thurlow. With Helen’s help David tried to control his daughter’s life and break-up her relationship with Adrian. But instead he drove her further away and in the Summer of 2000, Gail decided to leave Stone Creek behind with Adrian Stone. They stole money out of David’s safe and took off on Adrian’s motorcycle.
David spent the next couple years rebuilding his reputation in Stone Creek as a professional doctor. As his marriage began to falter, so did his hope in ever seeing his daughter again. He had already lost Monica to her own sickness and his wandering eye. Now he had pushed his daughter away. David admitted that his marriage was poisoned for his betrayal of Monica.
Start of the Series...
A car accident brought Emily Roscoe into the emergency room and David treated her for a week before she woke up to his voice. The younger woman reminded him of his daughter and he developed a bond with her. Later in 2010 he got a surprise when Gail showed up at the hospital in search of her father’s comfort and although he was interested in what happened to her in the last ten years, Gail was able to push it off. But Gail resurfacing threatened Helen who went behind her husband’s back and located Adrian Stone in order to find out what really happened between the two of them. With the intentions of getting back together with Gail, Adrian came back to Stone Creek to find David’s over protective attitude coming between the two of them.
In a moment of weakness Gail Schmidt revealed that she had been pregnant with Adrian’s child but feared that she would turn out like her mother, so she struggled with telling him the truth, even roping their mutual friend, Dizzy Roberts, to keep her secret. But tragedy struck when during a robbery Gail suffered a miscarriage and instead of telling Adrian the truth the mourning Gail fled their home. Devastated, David informed his wife that if she had anything to do with Adrian coming back to Stone Creek he would divorce her. Helen tried to cover her tracks but Gail quickly found out and held the information over Helen’s head. His daughter never had the intentions of telling David about Helen’s secret, hoping to spare him of the pain.
During the terrible accident in February of 2011, David was left to treat Penelope Wilkinson of her injuries following her car plowing into a bar filled with numerous patrons. She had killed two people in the intrusion, one of them being Isobel Cortez, Catalina Cortez’s younger sister. While following a check-up, David was prepared to tell Penelope of her brain cancer -- which caused the seizure that caused the car accident -- but a frantic Catalina interrupted him and pulled a gun on Penelope. David and Helen bonded over handling Penelope’s cancer, but their fighting escalated afterwards and he admitted that they were no longer fighting to stay together.
Gail revealed to her family that she was pregnant with Adrian’s child once again, although David wasn’t a fan of Adrian still, he accepted the relationship. On Halloween of 2011, Gail collapsed and everyone thought she would miscarry again. Instead her friend, Dizzy Roberts; who had come to Stone Creek to help with Gail’s pregnancy, informed the family that Gail had Gestational Diabetes and she wanted to monitor Gail for the remainder of the pregnancy in case something bad were to happen. While waiting with Adrian for news about Gail and the baby, David revealed to the younger man why he had been protective of Gail for so long and admitted his guilt over losing Monica in 1992.
On New Years Eve at the stroke of midnight, Gail went into labor on the dance floor, they rushed her to the hospital and she gave birth to a premature baby girl named Violet Monica Stone. Along with his granddaughter’s birth, his wife, Helen informed him that she was the one behind Adrian Stone coming back to Stone Creek and he asked for a divorce. Unbeknownst to him, Helen had been fighting an attraction to Patrick Sutton. Once David was able to file for divorce he enlisted Melinda Lombardi as his attorney and when Helen showed up with her own legal force, William Maverick, and demanded the home he bought while married to Monica, things became strained.
His close friendship with Emily Roscoe enlisted him to be her confidant, she constantly aided in David’s advice about her boyfriend Bentley Wilkinson and his proposal that they get married. He insisted that she do what made her happy and he supported their relationship. Her murder in 2012 devastated David.
