James Thurlow stood above the casket as it stood upon the hole in the ground. The carved box didn’t seem as special as they told him it would be. The engravement didn’t seem so meaningful as he had wanted it to be. He had spent most of his life watching out for his younger sister and today, nothing seemed worth her.
He stood there, with his family huddled close. His mother, Anita Thurlow, stern and calculated stood on his right side. His arm around her to keep the woman from wandering into another state of being. How could both of his siblings be gone?
Caitlyn Thurlow, his wife of seven years, stood on his left side with her hand rubbing his shoulder. Caitlyn didn’t even get to know his sister Shannon. Not like James would have liked her too. There were so many stories he could tell Caitlyn, so many memories, but they would never live up to them actually co-existing with one another.
As the reverend went on about how Shannon was taken too soon, James couldn’t help but look up at his children. The two who were able to come and pay their respects. Emmet was growing up to be a good man. Taking charge of the legal aspects of the family business.
Next to his son was Emmet’s sister Kirsten, a woman so strong and confident that it reminded him of his own father at times. Her husband Charlie Sutton stood behind her as she leaned against him for support.
